Thoughts from a Terminal (Last Week)

I miscalculated. I thought that Chiang Kai-Shek airport would have the right brand of wireless so that I could get some work done. And that KLM would be accepting my bags four hours before the flight. Oh sorry, they just renamed it last week, Taoyan, taoyuan, Tao-something airport. So my readerz I give y’all an update from where else but a Starbucks in Terminal 2.

Today I schlepped my green mule-pack across the street from my hotel to the bus station. I feel like Rambo every time I put on my 3000 cubic inch backpack. I’m starting to think that a business suitcase with rollers wouldn’t be a bad idea. But maybe it’s not a bad idea to look like a broke backpacker when traveling. Particularly when you are a broke backpacker.

I’ve been jettisoning stuff as I’ve been traveling, trying to lighten the load. I bequeath books, screw drivers, networking cable. It’s a challenge to live out of a back pack.

I sent back my winter coat from Hong Kong. (Oh yeah, the skiing one I stole from you bro, so when they assign you to scenic Buttkrackfreeze, Alaska you can take it with you.) Tropical places from here on out!

I’m starting to like VOIP. I had to call ahead to Thailand to make reservations, and I often call the US with it (I don’t think there’s a cheaper way other than IM). But I had to buy a headset to get a decent microphone. The only drawback is you have to have a decent connection. My hotel room connection was flaky at times, so I was a little stressed about making reservations last night.

On Friday there were rallies to depose the current President of Taiwan about two blocks from my hotel. “Depose A-Bian!” They closed off streets and people marched in the thousands, dressed in red T-Shirts with thumbs down and with headbands. One of my friends here took part, and I met with her at the rally for a little while. The basic gripe is a series of scandals, and reports of corruption.

Yeah, big stuff happening in the world, but I’m tuning it out. Phuket! I’m going to Phuket. Eurkel laugh. (Useless pedantry: pun doesn't work with the way Thai is really pronounced.)

There’s an international airport in Phuket, but I’m flying into Bangkok, and then staying in an airport hotel. I’m all cultured-out, so I’m making a run for the beach straight away.
